20 Jan Sarahy’s Scoop: NCAA Week 2 and 3
RANKINGS SHAKE-UP!
NCAA Gymnastics did not disappoint this week. As the men moved into Week 2 and the women wrapped up Week 3, the results served as an early reminder that early rankings don’t mean much once the season actually gets going.

1. No. 20 Minnesota upsets No. 5 Michigan
Minnesota pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the week, handing then-No. 5 Michigan a road loss with a 197.150 at home. The Golden Gophers put together a steady meet, highlighted by Jordan Lyden’s pair of 9.925s on bars and beam, and a 9.900 vault from Teryn Crump. Leah Gonsiorowski added a strong 9.900 on floor to help seal the win.

Michigan struggled to find consistency on vault and floor, which ultimately proved costly, though Kaylie Boozer delivered the top score of the meet with a 9.950 on beam.
2. No. 8 Georgia upsets No. 2 LSU
Georgia added another upset to the weekend, defeating LSU for the first time since 2016 in a meet shaped by mistakes on both sides. LSU’s floor rotation ultimately became the turning point, opening the door for Georgia to pull ahead. Earlier in the meet, the Tigers were forced to count a 9.650 on vault, followed by a 9.575 on Floor, scores that proved costly.
The loss dropped LSU to No. 4 in the national rankings.
3. Oklahoma dominates the Rocky Mountain Open with a Team Score of 323.95
Oklahoma made an early statement at the Rocky Mountain Open, posting a commanding team score of 323.950 in its first meet of the season. The Sooners looked sharp across all six events, highlighted by a 55.200 team score on pommel horse, the highest posted in the NCAA this past week.
They followed with consistent performances on floor (53.650), rings (52.850), vault (54.200), parallel Bars (54.900), and high bar (53.150), maintaining momentum throughout the meet. The performance reinforced why Oklahoma remains one of the teams to watch as the season continues!
4. Jordan Chiles Earns a Perfect 10 on Vault
Over the past few weeks, Jordan Chiles has dominated the national All Around rankings. While she is no stranger to earning 10s in the NCAA, this weekend marked her first career perfect 10.0 on vault. Chiles earned the score for her Yurchenko double full, a performance that played a key role in UCLA’s first home win of the season against Nebraska.
5. Michigan Wolverines Get A Big Win at Ohio State Open
On the men’s side, Michigan earned its second straight win of the season at the Ohio State Open. The Wolverines posted a team score that marked a 7.4-point improvement from their Week 1 performance. With back-to-back wins, Michigan currently sits at No. 5 in the rankings. Michigan has yet to see a performance from Olympian Frederick Richard this season, leaving questions about how the lineup may continue to take shape.

Sarahy Mora Rincon is a Communications and Media Arts & Design double major at James Madison University. The Richmond, Virginia native serves as president of JMU Club Gymnastics, where she helps lead the team and support its events, outreach, and involvement in the collegiate club gymnastics community.
