Sarahy’s Scoop: NCAA Week 1 and 2

Sarahy’s Scoop: NCAA Week 1 and 2

By Sarahy Mora

GAME ON!

This was an action packed weekend in the NCAA Gymnastics world. From comebacks to season debuts, this weekend proved that this is shaping up to be a must-watch season. Let’s take a look at 5 moments that stood out this week!

1. Florida rises to No.1 spot after Posting Top Team Score in the Nation

The Florida Gators opened the weekend with a performance that immediately reshaped the national rankings. Competing at home against the West Virginia Mountaineers, Temple Owls, and the North Carolina Tar Heels, Florida looked strong and sharp across all four events.

Kayla DiCello returned to NCAA competition after two years away, while Ly Bui recorded a 9.925 on vault. Selena Harris-Miranda followed with scores of 9.950 on bars and 9.975 on beam. The meet concluded with a 197.725, the highest team score in program history and the top score nationally through the opening weeks of the season.

2. Stanford claims No.1 Team Ranking after Preseason No.3 Placement

After a tough loss at the NCAA Championships last season, the Stanford Cardinal opened the year with something to prove. Despite entering the season ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll, Stanford surged to the top spot after Week 1, delivering a statement performance in its season debut. While teams are still finding their rhythm early in the year, the Cardinal’s consistency across all six events set them apart and quickly established them as the team to beat.

However, several top programs, including Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, have yet to open their seasons, leaving the rankings likely to shift in the coming weeks.

3. Avery Neff has the first 10.0 of the season

Perfect scores remain one of the sport’s most closely watched moments, and the first of the season arrived early. Avery Neff, a sophomore for the Utah Red Rocks, earned a 10.0 on a Yurchenko one and a half at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad.

The vault marked the first perfect score of the year and served as one of the weekend’s defining individual performances.

4. Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad ends in a tie between LSU and Oklahoma

The Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad delivered one of the tightest finishes of the weekend, featuring the UCLA Bruins, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, and the Utah Red Rocks.

LSU and Oklahoma concluded the meet tied at 197.500 after counting the top five scores on each event. The tie was broken by counting all six routines, with Oklahoma emerging ahead in the final standings, a result that underscored just how narrow the margin was throughout the competition.

5. Alabama at Clemson

The Alabama Crimson Tide earned the No. 4 spot after competing on the road against the Clemson Tigers in Clemson. Performing away from home early in the season can be a challenge, but Alabama delivered steady routines throughout the meet and maintained consistency across its lineups.

The performance reflected Alabama’s ability to handle road environments and continue building momentum as the season progresses, keeping the Crimson Tide firmly in the national conversation.
