Over Fourth of July weekend, Team USA will start their quest of winning a team medal at this year’s World Championships in Rotterdam. The United States will send five members of the National Team to the 2010 Japan Cup. The team, lead by the reigning national champion Jonathon Horton, will compete against teams from China, Russia, Germany and Japan during the team competition held July 3. Following the team competition the top 12 gymnast, with a maximum of two per country, will compete in the all-around finals on July 4.
Using the same rules as this year’s World Championships, three gymnasts will compete on each event and all three scores counting. This gives Team USA a chance to see where they currently stand against the four powerhouses in men’s gymnastics.
Horton will be joined by his 2009 World Championship’s teammate Danell Leyva, as well as three NCAA competitors: Chris Cameron, 2010 NCAA all-around champion; Alex Naddour, 2010 NCAA pommel horse champion; and Paul Ruggeri, 2010 Moscow World Stars high bar bronze medalist. The team will be coached by Horton’s personal coach, Tom Meadows and Yuan Xio.
