Gymnastics World Continues to Mourn Death of Ryazanov

The gymnastics world continues to mourn the death of 2009 World All-around bronze medalist Yuri Ryazanov. The 22-year-old Russian team member was killed in a car crash earlier this week, just five days after winning his bronze medal. The accident occurred near Vladimir, approximately 125 miles to the east of Moscow.

"He was one of our most talented young athletes who could have achieved great things," a Russian Gymnastic Federation spokeswoman said via Reuters. "This is very tragic news for Russian gymnastics."

Gymnasts from around the world have also expressed their sorrow. Great Britain’s Beth Tweddle told the Chester Chronicle in the UK: “Our thoughts as a British team go out to his family…It makes you think about things. You have to make the most of every moment.”

Many gymnasts have also taken to Facebook and Twitter as a means to express their sympathies. Among them:

Ryazanov was the 2009 Russian National Champion and in addition to his bronze at this year’s Worlds was also the bronze medalist at the 2009 European Championships. He will be greatly missed and we, along with the rest of the gymnastics community, offer our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.
