Really?
By Chris Korotky
When we saw a
story on the Yahoo! homepage (in the leadoff position) talking about Gabby
Douglas’ hairstyle and fans who were complaining about it, I thought –
“Really?” Douglas responded today when chatting with reporters: "OK, I
don't know where this is coming from. What's wrong with my hair? I gelled it
back and put some clips in it… and they're all like, 'You need to take the
clips out or something.' I'm like, I just made history and people are focused
on my hair…I just want to say, ‘We're all beautiful inside [and] out.’”
In the magazine, we cover competition fashion, leotard looks, styles, and trends and I think it’s an aspect of the sport that people enjoy seeing and discussing. But the coverage (across all media) should really be in proportion and also relative to the role it plays. In this case, Douglas just accomplished an amazing feat with an awe-inspiring performance and has so many amazing facets to her story and her personality... and people focus on this?
And besides, her hairstyle was competition-appropriate! For the record, she says she’ll wear it in the same style for uneven bars and balance beam finals.
Gabby, you’re beautiful, your personality is terrific and ….you’re Olympic Champion!
