Gabby Douglas to be Featured on Rock Center with Brian Williams
By Elizabeth Grimsley
2012 Olympian Gabrielle Douglas will be featured in Thursday, July 19’s episode of Rock Center with Brian Williams at 10pm/9c on NBC.
The feature discusses Douglas’ family and the story behind almost having to give up her Olympic dream just months before the Games. Now, with only eight days until the Olympics are set to begin, Douglas thinks back on her journey to making it to London.
“Remember this name: Gabby Douglas,” Chris Jansing reports. “You’re likely going to hear a lot about her in the next few weeks. A bubbly 16-year old gymnast affectionately known as the “flying squirrel,” she is poised to take the Olympics by storm as she attempts to become only the second African American woman to medal in the sport. But the journey that ends in London has been difficult. While her dad was serving in the army in Afghanistan, Gabby’s mom and sister made tremendous sacrifices to allow her to pursue what often seemed a very unlikely goal.”
You can watch Douglas as well as the rest of her teammates go for the gold at the Olympic starting with the qualification round on July 29. Or check out the “Final Dismount” in the upcoming issue of Inside Gymnastics to see exactly why Gabby Douglas earned the nickname “The Flying Squirrel!”
