When the Mag 7 brought home the
first-ever team gold for US at the 1996 Olympics, Elizabeth Price was only a
couple months old. A few years later,
she began taking gymnastics lessons because “my mom wanted to tire me
out.”
When she was 12 years old, she watched the 2008 Olympic Trials and she allowed her mind to fast forward to the future. “I’ve been thinking about being at Trials for a couple of years now,” she reflected in San Jose, site of the 2012 Trials. “Ever since I saw Shawn (Johnson) and Nastia (Liukin)…Everyone dreams about going to the Olympics, but not many people actually have the chance to try and make it…I’m really excited to show everyone what I’m capable of.”
Now, as the U.S. women look to reclaim that gold from 1996, Price, who trains at Parkettes in Pennsylvania, finds herself among the group of top contenders vying for one of five coveted Olympic spots. On day one of the 2012 Olympic Trials, Price placed fourth with a score of 59.600, and continued to keep her name high on that contender list.
Price is perhaps the surprise challenger this year, having jumped into the mix as a first-year senior. In fact, at last year’s National Championships, Price finished outside the top ten – in the Junior division. Having just completed her sophomore year as a home-schooler, Price has peaked at the perfect time. So what’s a typical day like for the 16-year old?
6:00 Alarm goes off… Go time!
6:30 Breakfast: Light breakfast, small bowl of cereal or an egg
7:00 Practice starts
11:00 Lunch Break: Big bowl of fruit salad, granola bar and lemonade
3:00 Practice ends

7:00 Dinner Time: Grilled chicken and rice or pasta
8:00 Computer break – surf the internet, listen to music…Faves – The entire new Justin Bieber album (“The day it came out, I offered to pay my brother to get off the computer so I could buy the new album!”) and Marilyn Monroe by Nicki Minaj. “I also listen to both of them on the way to the gym, on the way home and before competition!”
Bedtime!
Price looks to get a good nights rest now and return on Sunday to put her final foot forward in the march toward London 2012!
