At the 2012 Olympic Trials, the 15 men’s competitors who have advanced to this stage will be competing in three rotation groups of five. And one of those rotation groups has a unique bond that will add an extra dimension of intrigue and camaraderie. In rotation group two, all of the athletes competed NCAA gymnastics for the University of Oklahoma, one of the most dominant programs in the country. Included in that rotation are Jonathan Horton, Chris Brooks, Jake Dalton, Steve Legendre and Alex Naddour.
“It’s team Oklahoma versus the world, dude,” Brooks exclaimed after podium training today. “We’re our own rotation – that’s pretty cool! I think that says a lot about the program, that they are successful not only on the NCAA [stage], but continue to go out on the Elite level and make a big stand… Even if I haven’t talked to Steve or Jake since the last National Team Camp, whenever we see each other, it’s like I still live down the street from them. We’re a close group of guys and I’m really pumped [that we’re all in the same rotation group]. It should be like a college meet again. It’s gonna be really fun! We always talk about ‘What if we were all on the same college team – what if that was the era, that’d be unbelievable.’ Well, now, this is our own little team. Let’s go do it!”
“It’s gonna feel like home,” Legendre says of the rotation group. “It’s gonna be such a comfortable fun feeling for all of us out there. We’re going to be yelling for each other and it’s going to be like an extra teammate for us out there. Obviously, it’s us as individuals trying to make one team, but I think at this point we’re already a team… We’ve all contributed to help the National Team and it’s going to be so much fun to represent that group.”
Ironically, two of the coaches for the group have Sooner connections as well. Tom Meadows competed for OU and Mark Williams is the current head coach. Sooner Pride, yall!
