Each day, the team at Inside Gymnastics will select five highlights from the day in Tokyo from the World Championships…
USA Unity – Only
two of the seven U.S. team members have competed previously at a World
Championships and only one has Olympic experience (Alicia Sacramone). But
watching the group interact on the podium during training and afterward during
the media interview sessions, one would think they have competed together for
years. With “mama bear” Sacramone providing guidance all along the way, the
team is unified and appeared confident and poised throughout.
Sense of Style – One of the greatest periods of gymnastics style was during the 1980s when the Soviets ruled the floor. With a nod to that heritage, Team Russia today showed elements of incredible style, particularly on floor and beam. From unique choreography down to the movement of the arms, wrists and hands, the attention to detail and the expressive quality of their routines was impressive. Unfortunately, there were a significant number of mistakes and miscues from the Russians today in training…. But with clean execution, some of these routines could be absolutely stunning.
Honorable Hosts – The Japanese people take great pride in hosting this event and it clearly shows. From the signage greeting visitors arriving at the airport to the hospitality inside the venue, the hosts are the epitome of class.
Cheering for Chuso – In 1988, Oksana Chusovitina won the Junior National Championships in the USSR. Today, competing for Germany, Oksana’s career is still flourishing at age 36. Could she make her sixth Olympic Games next year?!
Looking Ahead to London – This year’s Worlds serve as one of two qualifiers for the 2012 Olympic Games, which is less than a year away. Many gymnasts talked about the excitement as well as nervous anticipation for this next year. The Olympic fever is definitely building and this event will be a great opportunity for a glimpse into the headliners and storylines to follow as London approaches!
