Williams Golden in Event Finals!

It wasn’t so long ago that Kayla Williams (pictured from the qualification round) was competing as a Level 10 gymnast. Now, she finds herself standing atop the podium as World Champion after vaulted a beautiful laidout Rudi and a stuck Yurchenko double to earn gold on day one of event finals at the 2009 World Championships. American teammate Rebecca Bross earned bronze on bars with a high-flying set that was marked by an aggressive tempo and extreme amplitude in her releases and dismount (full twisting double back). In addition to Williams, other World Champions crowned today included He Kexin (CHN) on uneven bars and for the men, Marian Dragulescu (ROU) on floor, Zhang Hongtao (CHN) on pommels, and Yan Mingyong (CHN) on rings, giving China three of five gold medals awarded today.
