Memmel Injured, But Still Slated to Compete
August 03, 2008
U.S. Olympic gymnast Chellsie Memmel injured her ankle Sunday in Beijing, training on floor exercise but is still expected to compete in the Olympic Games.
“USA Gymnastics is monitoring Chellsie on a daily basis,” USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny said in a statement.
The following day, Memmel trained primarily on uneven bars, sans her double front dismount. "We're taking things a day at a time but I was able to do good bars today. ..." Memmel said in a statement to the Associated Press after the workout.
A broken foot derailed Memmel’s 2004 Olympic hopes where she was relegated to an alternate position. She came back strong in 2005, claiming the World all-around title. She’s battled through a number of injuries throughout this quad, but once again battled back and claimed third place at this year’s National Championships and Olympic Trials.
If the ankle injury prevents Memmel from competing on vault, floor and beam, Memmel still has the potential to pack a powerful punch for team USA on bars. Her jam-packed set has a difficulty value of 7.0, among the highest in the world.
